Ria graduated in 1998 with a degree in psychology from the Ateneo de Manila University. She had high hopes for becoming a therapist for dysfunctional social butterflies but instead she became a high school English teacher for a year. An internship for Summit Publishing turned into a full time job as beauty editor for Cosmopolitan Philippines.In 2001 she worked as a human resources manager/special projects coordinator for the company of Manila-based fashion designer Rajo Laurel.

Tired of floating in mid-level management, Ria became a freelance writer/makeup artist/stylist in 2003 and worked on various theatrical productions, fashion shows, photography exhibits, editorial work, and fashion/beauty spreads.

In 2005 she co-wrote Ang Pamana: The Inheritance with Romeo Candido and Carmen de Jesus, and in 2006 worked on the set of the movie as script supervisor.
